Getting started

Move from another app or a spreadsheet

Which file to export from Empower, Rocket Money, another app, or a spreadsheet, and what Taiga Finance keeps from it.

Your history from another finance app comes over as files you export from it. Taiga Finance never signs in to the other app. It reads the export files of four apps by name: Monarch, YNAB, Empower, and Rocket Money. Anything else, including a spreadsheet you kept yourself, comes in as a Bank CSV. The order is the same for every source: connect, then balances, then transactions. Migrate from Monarch and Migrate from YNAB cover those two apps’ files.

Two kinds of history can come over. Transactions fill Transactions, Reports, and the spending side of Plan. Balances over time fill the net-worth chart for the years before your first sync. A named app’s file brings its categories with it, and you decide what each one becomes. A Bank CSV brings no categories, so Taiga Finance’s rules categorize every row.

  1. Export your transactions from Empower as a CSV file. Taiga Finance reads both the comma-separated and the tab-separated form.

  2. On Import, on the Transactions tab, click Empower (Personal Capital) and upload the file. Its tile hint reads export.csv.

  3. On the Map step, each account in the file is matched to one of yours. Empower writes an account as Checking ( ) - Ending in 1234, and Taiga Finance matches on those last four digits, so an account you connected first is usually found and tagged Best match. Confirm it, or use + Create account for one Taiga Finance doesn’t have.

  4. Under Category review, give each Empower category a decision.

  5. Click Continue to review →, then Import N transactions.

The file’s date, description, category, account, and amount come over. The description becomes the merchant. Empower’s Tags column isn’t read. The transactions file carries no balances and no investment holdings, so neither comes from it.

How do I bring over my Rocket Money history?

  1. Export your transactions from Rocket Money as a CSV file.

  2. On Import, on the Transactions tab, click Rocket Money and upload the file. Its tile hint reads transactions.csv.

  3. On the Map step, confirm where the file’s accounts land, and give each Rocket Money category a decision under Category review.

  4. Click Continue to review →, then Import N transactions.

A Custom Name you gave a transaction in Rocket Money wins over its Name as the merchant. A Note is added to the end of the description. A row with a value under Ignored From imports as cancelled. Original Date, Tax Deductible, and Transaction Tags aren’t read.

Copilot, Quicken Simplifi, Credit Karma, Tiller, a Mint export saved before Mint closed in 2024, and a spreadsheet in Google Sheets or Excel all come in through Bank CSV on the Transactions tab. Taiga Finance has no importer that recognizes those apps’ columns. It reads the file by its values instead, and you confirm what it found on Map your columns.

  • The file is a CSV. Save or download your transactions as CSV. A spreadsheet works once it is saved as a CSV file. Tiller keeps your data in a spreadsheet, so download its Transactions sheet as a CSV.
  • One file is one account. A Bank CSV binds every row to the account you pick under Pick an account…, even when the file has an account column. Split an export that covers several accounts into one file per account, and import each into its own account.
  • It needs a date, a description, and an amount. A pair of debit and credit columns works in place of the amount. A status column is optional. Other columns, including a category, are ignored.

When your old app or spreadsheet has a table of balances by date, the Balance history tab imports it as a separate file. CSV & PDF importers has the column and sign rules for Bank CSV and Balance history.

Every transaction from my export landed on one account.

Section titled “Every transaction from my export landed on one account.”

A Bank CSV binds the whole file to the one account you picked under Pick an account…. Split the export into one file per account, and import each with its own account selected.

The categories from my old app didn’t come over.

Section titled “The categories from my old app didn’t come over.”

Bank CSV files carry no categories into Taiga Finance, so Taiga Finance’s rules assigned one to every row. Change a category on any transaction in Transactions, or write a category rule so the change applies to every matching transaction.

A bank’s .ofx or .qfx file isn’t accepted for transactions.

Section titled “A bank’s .ofx or .qfx file isn’t accepted for transactions.”

The Transactions tab takes CSV and PDF files. OFX / QFX is read only on the Investment holdings tab, as a brokerage statement. Download the bank’s transactions as CSV, or import its PDF statement.

Can I bring over my budget from another app?

Section titled “Can I bring over my budget from another app?”

Only from YNAB. The Budget config tab reads YNAB’s Budget.csv. No other app’s budget imports, and no app’s goals do. A budget is built in Plan.

Yes, from a brokerage or exchange file. A finance app’s transaction export carries no holdings. The Investment holdings tab reads a Fidelity positions CSV, an OFX / QFX statement, and Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini exports. CSV & PDF importers lists what each reads.

Notes from Rocket Money do, tags from no app. A Rocket Money note is added to the description. Empower and Rocket Money tags aren’t read, and a Bank CSV reads only the date, description, amount, and status.

No. You can import files only. Connecting first gives each account its last four digits, which Taiga Finance uses to match a named app’s accounts, and live syncing keeps balances current after the import.
